Can the Kansas Jayhawks climb out of their funk? And are the Kentucky Wildcats the proper foil for that kind of thing? We would have said something different a couple of weeks ago, as the ‘Cats were clearly going through some struggles. But not now, as John Calipari says that his team is truly playing with some “attitude” as they prepare for this momentous non-conference encounter that is scheduled to tip off at 7 PM ET at the legendary Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS. Remember that even after this game gets underway, BetAnySports customers will have the opportunity to take advantage of real-time wagers against the college basketball odds when they use the software provided by Live Betting Extra.

Kansas is currently #3 in the coaches’ poll and #4 with the Associated Press, but they are not likely to be in the same place i a couple of days when the new rankings are announced, as they have lost three of their last five. And the Iowa State Cyclones scored a rather convincing 85-72 victory over them last time out. It would appear to be a good thing that the Jayhawks have been able to exert quite an advantage in Lawrence, where they have not only won 37 games in a row (including thirteen over ranked teams), but lost only nine times in 209 tries for coach Bill Self at this venue.

And then there is the other matter – that of pure revenge. And BetAnySports patrons need to take note of it. In the early part of last year’s schedule, in the Champions Classic, Kentucky took the Jayhawks out to the woodshed, holding them below 20% shooting (11 of 56) in a humiliating 72-40 beating that represented their lowest point total ever compiled under Self’s stewardship.

Speaking of point totals, Kansas averages 88 points at home, and 84 overall, but they have not reached that latter figure at all in the last six games – ever since the spine-tingling triple-overtime win over Oklahoma. This team is on a five-game ATS losing streak, bringing their NCAAB college basketball betting pointspread mark to 9-8. All told, they are 16-4 straight-up, and Kentucky has the same record, although the Wildcats have been less successful against the number (9-11 ATS).

Calipari has brought in another standout cast of freshmen, but he has gotten a lot more out of, say, guard Jamal Murray (17.5 ppg) than center/forward Shal Labissiere (1.7 blocks, but only 2.9 rebounds). This team, which lost a lot of talent to the NBA, including #1 overall selection Karl-Anthony Towns, may take time to jell, and recent results could be an indication that is happening. There have been three straight wins, including one over Arkansas, as well as an 88-54 romp over Missouri on Wednesday. Tyler Ulis, a “veteran” on this team (sophomore) had 28 in that game. And junior Derek Willis, who hardly saw the floor at all in his first two seasons in Lexington, has been a very key figure for Calipari over the last four games, averaging 12 points, ten rebounds and two clocked shots.

Interestingly enough, Kentucky starts only two freshmen. Kansas has four starters who are either juniors or seniors, including leading scorers Perry Ellis (16.7 ppg) and Wayne Selden (14.6), and it will be interesting to see if freshman Chieck Diallo, whose widely-anticipated arrival was delayed, will play any prominent role here. If Kansas is going to make a title run, Diallo will have to mature as a player in a hurry.
