It would seem on the surface like the game between the George Washington Colonials and the San Diego State Aztecs, scheduled for Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the NIT, is a matchup of great offense versus great defense. But like most things, it’s a little more nuanced than that. You can’t get this far without playing well on both ends of the floor, and as we take a closer look at things, both of these clubs have stepped up in those areas. This game is scheduled for 9:30 PM ET at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, which is where the “final four” of this tournament is played every year. San Diego State comes into this game with a record of 28-9 straight-up and 17-13-3 against the basketball pointspread. They have a pretty balanced lineup, although if you asked head coach Steve Fisher, who once won a national championship with Michigan, he would like to see something extra out of freshman guard Jeremy Hemsley, who has been somewhat slow coming around after an injury. He averaged 12.2 points per game this season. It’s a pretty solid frontline, consisting of Malik Pope, Skyler Spencer and Winston Shepard, but all indications are that the Aztecs may have their hands full with George Washington’s center, Kevin Larson, a native of Denmark who has averaged 18 points and five assists during this tournament. The real go-to guy in the quarterfinal game against Florida, however, was Tyler Cavanaugh, who hit four triples and had 23 points on the evening. And George Washington came up with a scheme to thwart the Gators’ big man, Dorian Finney-Smith, limiting him to just nine points and thus throwing a monkey wrench into the Florida offense.
